Brad was raised on a mixed farm 1 mile from our current location, he always knew even as a youngster that he would some day make a living on the farm. The family farm consisted of grain, pigs, and cattle. Brad recalls the first Charolais bull to be used on the farm would have been in the mid 70's. After graduation from high school he attended ACC in Brandon to take motor vehicle mechanics. In 1992, he started his first cattle herd by purchasing a few cows from a neighbour. For a number of years Brad worked throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan for a construction company until settling back home and getting married in 1997.
We searched for an existing farm yard to buy (without any luck) so in 1999 we decided to use part of a 1/4 section we already owned and made a new yard site. After moving a house in, we have spent countless hours planting trees, installing hydro and phone lines, digging wells, building a lane, corrals, cattle shelters, and a barn. Finally, we have established ourselves a yard site although it always seems to be a work in progress!
With our farm yard, family, and land base well on its way we decided to expand into purebred Charolais. A group of 10 open heifers and then a small herd dispersal out of Saskatchewan (thanks Ralph and Maureen) was the beginning of our new venture. We built our purebred herd up to 80 females, then in 2017 we purchased another 70 Charolais females. This brings our purebreds up to 150, plus 50 commercial females. We also crop 1200 acres of grain land.
We do not hire outside help so our children, Logan and Kendra are actively involved with the daily operations.
Logan is very good at handling the heavy equipment on the grain side as well as assisting with the daily feeding of the cattle, he has now completed his agribusiness course and is working full time in the ag industry.
Kendra has a natural love of all kinds of animals and it shows in her abilities to handle the cattle. She has the replacement heifers turned into big pets every year, she has completed her education in the business/finance field and is working full time in the ag industry.
It is always a pleasure to have new and repeat commercial buyers come into the yard. We feel fortunate to be given the chance to get to know so many other families making a living the same way we do. Every phone call, visit to the yard, and bull sale is greatly appreciated. It allows us to keep doing what we love to do.
We are never far from home, as always visitors are welcome anytime.
